Lost your Lightsphere? A piercing might save you.

I lost mine. How can someone loose his or her Lightsphere? As you’ll see its really easy. Avoiding to loose it the next time is easy too.

2008-043d-0055-e01-webgal.jpg Having shot whole day at the World Bodypainting Festival 2008 in Seeboden (Austria) I was preparing myself for shooting the music gig of the Global Kryner and the Fluoro Award.

So I clamped my monostat with a superclamp on a barricade, mounted the camera on the ball head and packed away the flash in one of the pockets of my photo harness. Since none of my pockets was big enough for the Lightsphere, I left it on top of the flash, sticking out of the pocket.

In the heat of the event I didn’t noticed that the Lightsphere slipped from the flash, and was buried under the feet of 100 photographers.
After three hours I noticed that the Lightsphere was gone and an immediate search brought no results. At the first day of the three day event! #!§&%4evr!

2008-043d-0058-e01-webgal.jpg On the next morning I was thinking about how to avoid such a loss the next time. The easiest possibility would be to clip the LS on my harness. Unfortunately the bloody thing has nothing on it that you could use for fixing it on whatever. I was walking around at the festival ground and passed by a tent where one of the bodypainters did his magic.

Looking at his craft and looking at the model I had a sudden flash of inspiration: a piercing! If I would pierce a hole in the LS, I could fasten a small metal ring or something on the damn thing. This would allow me to clip the LS on my photo vest or the harness and I could easily access the thing if I need it.

2008-043d-0057-e01-webgal.jpg A week later I did the mod. Its really simple. I pierced a hole in the LS with one of these multi purpose rivet guns, applying a rivet in the hole and then sticking a cable strap through it that would hold a small key ring. It cost me a few cents and was done in a minute. Lucky me.
By the way, the whole issue had a happy end. When I was walking around on the second day of the festival I was chatting with some of the other photographers. Know what? One of the guys found my LS and I finally got it back. 1000 thanks to a honest photographer! What a community.
